Hitting the High Notes
First: Laser hair removal is considered a permanent way to reduce unwanted hair. The
procedure does not remove all hairs, but permanently reduces the total number of hairs
in the area treated. The more treatments you have, the less hair remains and the
longer the time between re-emergence of hair. Typical area takes 6 treatments and a
once a year local treatment maybe required thereafter depending on age, hormone
levels, and other diseases that may in themselves cause hair growth.
How do Lasers remove hair?
The process is by destroying the hair follicles and is sometime referred to as selective
photo-thermolysis. During the treatment, a laser is scanned over the skin, and light
energy enter through the top layer of the skin traveling down the hair to the follicle. The
Hair follicle acts as a chromatophore and absorbs the light energy causing the cells to
heat up. By absorbing this laser energy, the hair follicles are damaged, impairing their
ability to grow. Typically, 1/3-1/2 of all active hair follicles are damaged in a single
typical treatment. When you add multiple treatments to be stacked, the total number of
follicles are reduced by the same 1/3 to 1/2.

Why do you need to have multiple treatments spaced apart? Why not just do them in
the same week or month?
The hair follicle needs to be in an active growth stage in order for the laser to disable
the growth. Hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after the treatment, thus multiple
treatments are required to deliver optimal results. Treatments are usually given at
intervals of 4-6 weeks, or when there is new hair growth in the area. On average, it
takes from 6 to 10 treatments to reduce the hair and therefore most clinics will not
guarantee removal.
What areas do you treat?
The most common areas where laser therapy is performed are upper lip, neck, face,
periareolar region (around the nipples of the breast), legs, bikini line, armpits and back.
